Response to SF Chronicle

by Jennifer Chen
This is a response to the SF Chronicle's criticism of Pro-Choice advocates using scientific/confusing terminology to further their cause.
Editor—
The abortion debate has long been a topic of heated discussion. Like many discussions of this sort, certain terminology has been cleverly used to gain momentum on both sides of the argument. In her article, “Supreme test of Insanity”, Kathleen Parker criticizes the Pro-Choice movement for using confusing, highly scientific words in order to desensitize the subject rather than confronting the harsh reality. Parker is correct in pointing out that language can be cleverly used in order to make one’s point stronger. Words are powerful tools and the Pro-Choice movement chooses to stay away from words that may trigger a moral debate. Instead, they make the issue a more scientific one.

However, Parker neglects to recognize that those that identify themselves as a part of the Pro-Life Movement also use this same strategy. With the use of words like “baby” or “murder”, certain thoughts and emotions are triggered that would cause individuals to sympathize with the cause of the Pro-life movement. It is difficult to take a writer’s argument as valid if they do not consider both sides.
