Mexico City lawmakers pass abortion bill

by Tessie Barton
The article discusses how Mexico City finally passed a law to legalize abortion. Even though the law has passed, women can still be imprisoned for getting an abortion late too late in pregancy.

“Mexico City Lawmakers pass Abortion Bill”-Santa Cruz Sentinel, Mark Stevenson

In response to your article on the legalization of abortion in Mexico City, I am happy to hear that the bill finally passed and now it is legal in that city. It is nice that finally all Mexican women will have the right to have an abortion, as it should be. But I do not agree with the laws there about when the abortions can happen. I can not believe that the Mexican City government would imprison women because they had an abortion after waiting more than 12 weeks. If it is medically unsafe than it should be illegal, but putting young women in jail for simply getting an abortion in a late trimester is too extreme. Also, I am sad to hear that 200,000 women have had to get illegal abortions each year in Mexico city, but now that abortions are legal these women can get clean, safe, medical treatment.
In our modern society, I would like to imagine that people are sensible enough to believe that it is a woman’s right to chose whether or not she wants an abortion, and am disappointed to hear that the mayor of Mexico City is still so against it.
