Mother’s Day in Fresno

by Mike Rhodes (mikerhodes [at] comcast.net)
Three Mother’s Day events took place in Fresno today. The Catholic Workers held a vigil for peace and to end the war in Iraq on a busy street corner in North Fresno. The Raging Grannies sang songs of peace and held a silent vigil at Woodward Park. Prison Moratorium Project members were at the Fresno County Jail in downtown Fresno demanding alternatives to incarceration. Photos of these events are below.

Supporters of the California Prison Moratorium Project where in front of the Fresno County Jail today calling for alternatives to incarceration. Family members who are mostly poor and / or families of color celebrated Mother’s day by visiting their sons, daughters, fathers or mothers. A Mother’s day banner was displayed in front of the Fresno County Jail as a symbolic regard to the hundreds of families caught up in a failed system. Family members signed the banner while at the same time petitioning Fresno Board Supervisors to stop any new jail expansion.
