Senator Hollingsworth Comments on the Passage of the State Budget

For Immediate Release: August 21, 2007

SACRAMENTO ---- Senator Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta), Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review, made the following the statement after the passage of the budget today by the Legislature:

“This is the first time in my seven year legislative career that I’ve seen Republicans achieve so many of our budget priorities. With further clarification of the Governor’s blue penciling the spending plan to a zero operating deficit, we have achieved a budget that at least balances spending and revenues on paper. The bond dollars allocated in this budget will be spent in a fair and efficient manner, without pork barrel earmarks or threats of frivolous lawsuits. Yet, while this is a budget that has been brought under control and reflects our list of priorities sought in the negotiations, it is still one that will result inevitably in a near $5 billion deficit next year, and as such it is not one I wanted to affix my name to for posterity. Further, we all need to begin addressing next year’s looming fiscal problem--now, and not wait until we are so far into the budget that our options to balance it become fewer and more difficult.”

The criminals who maliciously held the workingclass of California hostage to their fascist agenda may claim concern about a deficit but their actions speak louder than words as it is they who are the proudest supporters of Nazi Gov Schwarzenegger's prison budget for 53,000 more prisoners and the same fascist governor's opposition to abolishing the "three strikes" law. And it iwas Schwarzenegger who opposed having the budget pass on majority vote to avoid the murder perpetrated by the parasitic fascists with the 2/3 vote requirement. This is the same fascist gang that opposes single payer health care, which passed last year's legislature and was vetoed by Schwarzenegger. Lots of budget problems are solved by abolishing prisons and the death penalty and promoting single payer healthcare for all, as well as rehabilitation, education and job training for all who actually commit the crimes of which they are accused so they can get a decent paying job. The immediate release of all prisoners eligibile for parole, over age 60, disabled or convicted of non-violent crimes, with no re-imprisonment for minor parole violations would also cut down on the prison budget. Democrats and Republicans together support this prison palm-greasing budget, paid for with our tax dollars. Only Peace & Freedom Party and the Green Party oppose this guns before butter budget as they are the only two anti-death penalty parties, and both oppose all of the phony war on crime and war on drug prison promotion schemes to make the rich richer.
