George Habash, Founder of PFLP, Dies at 82
27/01/2008 George Habash, the doctor who founded the Marxist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, died Saturday at 82 in a hospital in Jordan.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas decreed three days of mourning.
Habash was born in Lydda in 1925 in what was then the British Palestine Mandate, the son of a merchant. In 1948, he had to abandon his medical studies at the American University in Beirut temporarily to help his family leave what had become Israel.
That upheaval was critical in his political career.
Habash founded the PFLP in late 1967 with the dual goal of regaining Palestine and of fomenting Marxist revolution in the Arab world.
Habash is survived by his wife of 46 years, Hilda, a cousin, and their two daughters.
