THE BERKELEY BIKE STATION NEEDS YOUR HELP!

The Berkeley Bike Station is a staffed bicycle parking facility in the concourse level of the Berkeley BART. It is a vital resource that for those of us to go car free. The current capicity of the bike station is way beyond the demand, and expanding to a above ground facility would allow us to park up to 350 bikes a day. Think of all the bikes that won't be stolen!

The city of Berkeley had pledged $300,000 to the project which got local agencies to pledge over a million dollars to open the new Bike station. Now the city has pulled back it's promise and now seeks to put the same kind of project instead in a parking garage without staff and without mechanics. With out this funding from the city, other agencies will pull out as well.

Currently the bike station serves the community by:
-Having FREE, safe, effective bicycle parking
-Offering mechanic services at a rate MUCH lower than local shops.
-Being a bicycle central with resources such as maps and knowlegable staff that works closely with the East Bay Bicycle Coalition
-Being the ONLY facility that sends a mechanic to the farmers market to do repairs and assements.

With a bike station expansion we could:
-Do all of the things above even more!
-Act a a central asset to the bicycle community in berkeley
-Offer classes, workshops and events which currently would be impossible
-Encourage people to ride more bicycles by offering them free parking and resources to help prevent theft.

Please come to the city council meeting in berkeley Monday December 8th at 7PM to express your concern over the mismanagement of funds.

MORE BIKES, LESS CARS!
