Call to Action in the Northern Redwoods
We are putting out a call to earth loving folks everywhere to converge in Humboldt County in Jan. and Feb. to take part in the defense of this imperiled temperate rainforest.
When: January, February 2009
Where: Redwoods of Northern Humboldt County.
Why: Starting Feb. 15th, Green Diamond has the go-ahead to industrially log rare mature Redwood groves, one of which is occupied by a pair of Northern Spotted Owls. The logging company has proposed residential development of some of the land. This development would be an environmental assault on the healthiest remaining coho salmon population in Humboldt Bay. The coho are an endangered species and one of many salmon species that are disappearing due to environmental damage.
A tree-sit and huge anti clear-cutting banner went up three weeks ago to send out the alert that this forest is in imminent danger. The tree-sitters are still going strong. The banner was damaged during a storm and is currently furled.
We are putting out a call to earth loving folks everywhere to converge in Humboldt County in Jan. and Feb. to take part in the defense of this imperiled temperate rainforest. On Feb. 15th in Ryan Creek (McKay Tract), Green Diamond can begin logging these magnificent Redwood, Douglas Fir, Grand Fir and Sitka Spruce trees that provide refuge for so many animals in a sea of ravaged landscape. We are inviting individuals as well as whole affinity groups to join in the defense of this vanishing temperate rainforest eco-system. We are currently searching for a safe convergence space, and housing for incoming activists, for February. Please call for carpool/housing info.
