Kettleman City is half-way between SF and Los Angeles in Kings County. It has the largest toxic waste dump west of the Mississippi. Waste Management of Houston, Texas, runs the dump and takes in carcinogenic PCBs from old transformers.

Jared Blumenfeld, the regional administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, launched a federal inquiry into the Kettleman City birth defects calling the situation “a human tragedy at a scale...none of us would want to have to endure. We will take our time and spend time on the ground,” he said, alluding to activists’ complaints that state officials had refused to visit the beleaguered enclave. “When I hear about people doing reports without going to the community, it makes my blood boil,” Blumenfeld said. --L.A. I've gone with the brown berets to many of the actions and events around this issue and must say that it is amazing to see these people stand up and fight for justice. The youth have been extremely powerful and really speaking truth to power. Keep fighting!
