This decade opened with Arab Spring and Occupy, pervasive mass actions and great aspirations for democracy in a drive for self-determination. The search for a new world continues as statist capitalism threatens a total war and has no credible answer to its imminent destruction of the earth’s life sustaining capacity. A counterrevolution based on the fear and persecution of the "other" has muddied a lot of thinking and clouded the possibility of global human solidarity.

The poisonous neo-fascism is animated by dreams of past national glories and empires. A global tide of refugees from the ethnic hatred is asking “where is the human solidarity?” Doesn’t the new retrogression call for a re-examination of Marx’s undiluted new humanism and its self-determination? How can Marx help the movement not only overcome external retrogressive forces and ideologies but overcome the internal impasse of pragmatism and pure activism?
