One Small Step Against the Surveillance State - Help Us Make the Case!

by Oakland Privacy Working Group
Help stop the surveillance state. Help the Oakland Privacy Working Group and the ACLU make the case that surveillance methodologies and equipment must be overseen by the people, who have the right to make decisions on what is permissible - not the police.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION: https://action.aclu.org/secure/stop-unchecked-police-surveillance-santa-clara-county
Across the country, police departments are buying and using new technologies to help them spy on the communities they’re supposed to protect. Here are just a few of the technologies we’re seeing across California:

- Stingrays that pinpoint the location of your cell phone, even when you’re inside your own home.
- License plate readers that reveal where you drive and paint a detailed picture of your life.
- Social media surveillance tools that rate your “threat level” based on what you write online.
- Here’s the problem: the public almost never gets a chance to weigh in before police departments start deploying these technologies. And all of these technologies can be used in ways that endanger your rights or even result in religious or racial profiling.

You deserve to have your voice heard. Communities should be able to decide what new technologies police can use, and how and when they can use them.

Right now, Santa Clara County is considering passing a policy that would ensure there is transparency, accountability, and oversight for all local surveillance technology proposals. It’s the first of its kind, nation-wide. Demand a seat at the table.

Sign and share this petition to let your local politicians know that they have your support.

(The Oakland Privacy Group's next meeting is on Wednesday, March 16th, at 6:30 PM at the OMNI Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland, CA. We'll be talking about the Santa Clara Surveillance Equipment Ordinance, along with many other topics)
