San José is in a housing crisis and needs your help!!!

by Lynda Carson (tenantsrule [at] yahoo.com)
On April 19, San Jose City Council will VOTE on changes to the current San Jose Apartment Rent Ordinance (ARO). This vote comes after more than a year of renters and community groups calling for meaningful protections to renters (See the Silicon Valley Renters' Rights Coalition position HERE) that has resulted in a research study, preliminary recommendations and community input. You can help by sending emails to the Mayor & City Councilmembers in support of strong renter protections!!!
San José is in a brutal housing crisis as a result of greedy landlords.

San Jose renters are being pushed out of our community by skyrocketing rents and unfair evictions. The city has the chance to bring better protection to renters NOW.

Your email letter of support can help to promote strong renter protections.

To get involved

Attend Tuesday’s San Jose City Council meeting April 19, 2016, and let council members know why stricter rent control policies take the city in the right direction. To ensure you get a seat, please arrive at 1:30 p.m. at council chambers, , 200 E. Santa Clara St.

Contact the Mayor & Council
 - If you cannot attend the meeting, please send an email to the Mayor & San Jose City Council asking for a fair and collective process to solve our city’s housing crisis, which include the following recommendations being proposed further below.  A sample email is below and can be sent to the San Jose City Clerk (cityclerk [at] sanjoseca.gov) which will ensure it’s delivered to all Councilmembers.

Or send your email directly to the Mayor & City Council members.

Subject: Apartment Rent Ordinance - VOTE FOR RENTERS

Your Letter:

Dear Mayor Sam Liccardo & City Councilmembers

I URGE YOU TO VOTE FOR THE STRONGEST RENTERS' PROTECTIONS POSSIBLE.

The Business Journal has on record three councilmembers expressing support for an inflation-based rent control model — Raul Peralez, Magdalena Carrasco and Councilmember Don Rocha, who submitted his own memo on Thursday endorsing most of the housing department's recommendations while also calling on staff to further study the issue of expanding rent control to cover duplexes.

I fully support the above mentioned Councilmember’s efforts to support strong rent control measures in San Jose.

This includes protections against evictions (Just Cause), keeping rents low (75% of CPI) on rent controlled apartments, more rent controlled apartments and ending discrimination against Section 8.

Do what is right for San Jose, protect renters!

Please support strong renter protections in San Jose.

Sincerely,
(Your Name)
