Santa Cruz Solidarity with Standing Rock Water Protectors to Oppose Dakota Oil Pipeline

by SC County News
Groups in Santa Cruz County are planning trips out to Standing Rock to support the Water protectors working to stop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), and to join in their efforts. For months Indigenous Water protectors have worked to prevent construction of the pipeline, which has desecrated sites sacred to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Thousands of Water protectors are on the scene with the support of hundreds of Native American Tribes. The DAPL is being financed by Energy Transfer Partners, which is based in Houston. Also known as the Bakken Pipeline, the DAPL if constructed could transport up to 450,000 barrels of crude oil per day from North Dakota to Illinois. Keith McHenry, of Santa Cruz Food Not Bombs, writes this: "Dakota Access has failed to consult with tribes and conduct a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Construction has already damaged burial grounds and could poison the sacred Missouri River and aquifer."

A group of Santa Cruz area residents calling themselves "Santa Cruz to Standing Rock" is planning to travel to Standing Rock this weekend. They plan to document the trip, which they describe as a, "journey to support our brothers and sisters who are fighting against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline."

Santa Cruz to Standing Rock posted this message on their Facebook page:

We've been in contact with the Sacred Stone Camp and along with the items on their camp needs page, they especially need warm clothing for children in the 3 to 8 year-old range.

We will be meeting people who would like to donate goods at the Safeway in Aptos at 11am on Saturday. We do have limited space, but will pack as much as we can fit.

See their list of needs at the link below.

Michael of the Watsonville Brown Berets is planning on traveling out to Standing Rock with a group of activists soon. Here is the message he posted on the Gofundme page created to raise funds for the journey:

Community!

Myself and a coalition of native rights activists and danzantes are gonna be making the trip to North Dakota, Standing Rock. The native people of that land are fighting a historic battle right now against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline which would threaten their water supply at the Sioux reservation and also would threaten the water supply of millions that depend on water that the pipeline will be built through. The construction of this pipeline that goes through native lands is also desecrating sacred native burial sights. I am trying to make this trip happen with a coalition of others so we can take a number of supplies that the Natives are asking outsiders to bring in. Supplies will consist of. Blankets, sleeping bags, food, camping gear such as tents, flashlights, solar lamps etc... first aid equipment, warm clothes, rain gear and tarps. We will be leaving on the 17th to North Dakota by vehicle and staying out there for 5 to 7 days. To make this possible I am trying to raise $1000 in two weeks so supplies could be bought for standing rock and to cover our traveling expenses. Please consider donating today to our coalition to make this possible! Thank you for your time and your donations.

Michael,
Watsonville Brown Berets

On Sunday, September 25, Santa Cruz Food Not Bombs and Livity Rising will be hosting a solidarity event at the Santa Cruz Post Office. Keith McHenry, one of the Food Not Bombs co-founders, wrote up this description of the event:

MNI WICONI WATER IS LIFE
Solidarity with Sacred Stone Camp’s effort to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline and the call for Obama to free Native American political prisoner Leonard Peltier:

Sunday, September 25, 2016
3:00 - 6:00 PM
Downtown Post Office Santa Cruz
Front and Water Streets
Santa Cruz, California

Ceremony with Bobby Castillo of the Apache/Xicano Nations and former International Spokesperson for the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Food Not Bombs will share free vegan meals, Livity Rising Mobile Clinic will also provide free holistic healing, and traditional mbira music of Zimbabwe by Tom Melkonian and Melissa Cara Rigoli.

The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is owned by Energy Transfer Partners of Houston, Texas. The DAPL, also known as the Bakken Pipeline, is proposed to transport 450,000 barrels of crude oil per day (which is fracked and highly volatile) from the Bakken fields of North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. Dakota Access has failed to consult with tribes and conduct a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Construction has already damaged burial grounds and could poison the sacred Missouri River and aquifer.

Federal government reports show that there have been more than 8,700 significant incidents with U.S. pipelines involving death, injury, and economic and environmental damage since 1986—more than 300 per year.

Leonard Peltier was targeted and unjustly convicted in 1977 for his work defending Indian land in South Dakota from the ravages of the fossil industry. He is part of the same struggle to defend the sacred Dakotas taking place today at Standing Rock.

WE WILL NOT ALLOW THIS PIPELINE TO CROSS OUR LAND, WATER, AND SACRED SITES.
