WorkWeek hears from ILWU Local 10 leaders and members on how labor should fight Trump and the attacks by the Republicans and Democrats. They discuss the need for an independent party of labor and for general strikes to unite the working class and defend against the coming attacks. WorkWeek also hears from a leader of UAW 2865 UC Gradate Students who talks about what issues they face and why they are walking out on January 20, 2017.
Next WorkWeek looks at the attack on public education, charters and privatization including the appointment of Betsy DeVos by Donald Trump. Joining WorkWeek radio is Carlos Taboada who is a former Richmond High UTR teacher and activist against privatization and charters in the West Contra Costa School District and ran for the board as a candidate opposing charters.
Also joining WorkWeek is Jack Gerson, a retired activist of the Oakland Education Association OEA and the California Teachers Association CTA. They discuss the attacks and the role of both the AFT and NEA in accepting charters and the Democrats who pushed No Child Left Behind and other corporate schemes to privatize education.

Nearly 1 million people marched in California against the Trump agenda on January 21, 2017 but the California Teachers Association and California Federation of Teachers with nearly 500,000 members were nearly completely absent from these protests. Many of the CTA and AFT members marched as individuals and their union locals organized no union contingents against charters, privatization and union busting which the Trump administration is pushing with the nomination of Betsy DeVos

Both the Democrats and Republicans have helped push charter schools and privatization in US schools. In California Governor Jerry Brown and his hand picked Board of Education and CTC are big supporters of charters and privatization of education. Already over $5 billion a year is being drained off from public schools for charters.
