Chilao School, located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest, is currently booking its 2017 schedule of events.  This year's opening event will take place on April 22, Earth Day, with an art exhibition and open house at the school and a hike/bike ride from Chilao Campground to Charlton Flat.  Potluck style lunch will be served.

Anyone who would like to host a presentation, workshop or seminar can.  The school will be open from 10 AM to 5 PM and has a projection screen,  flat screen television, and DVD set-up with a sound system.

Presenters, workshop leaders, teachers and artists are welcome to use the school, free of charge, for classes and retreats.  The school operates on a donation basis and donations are encouraged, but never demanded.  There is one catch.  Instructors must also pass this generosity along to their workshop participants.

Materials fees are acceptable, but the School is seeking presenters who are willing to share their knowledge, skills and ideas for the greater good and not for their personal profit.

It's a bold concept for a non profit association that depends on donations for its survival.  But it has been working for six years.  Redbird, the Native American and environmental 501(c)(3) which owns Chilao School, has been offering programs at the location since 2011.

Situated in Chilao Campground, the school is in close proximity to numerous hiking and bicycling trails.  The campground itself provides several miles of paved road for leisurely strolls and rides.  The school rests on a habitat transition from mountain meadow to high desert flora and fauna, with a rich diversity of plants and animals who call the place home.

Redbird's ultimate goal is to acquire two adjacent US Forest Service residences and renovate them into housing that can serve special needs groups, from Veterans to families with members who have debilitating and life threatening illnesses.  For now, the school is used somewhat like a hostel for overnight visitors, with a number of couches, five air mattresses, and a good supply of warm blankets.  At an elevation of 5,400 feet, nights can be chilly in Chilao.

To book an event at the school please send an email to redbirds_vision [at] hotmail.com with Chilao School in the title.  For more information about Redbird please visit http://www.redbirdsvision.org
