BISHOP OF CALIFORNIA TO LEAD “BEACH CLEAN-UP MASS”

March 2017 – On Saturday, March 25 at 10:00am, the Right Reverend Marc Handley Andrus, Bishop of California, will preside over a “Beach Clean-up Mass” at one of Oakland’s officially designated ‘trash hotspots’ – the East Creek Slough.

This one-day event is the inauguration of an emerging relationship between Holy Hikes™ (http://www.holyhikes.org), a Christian hiking group, and San Francisco Baykeeper (http://www.baykeeper.org), a nonprofit that has been working to protect the San Francisco Bay from pollution. All are welcome to join this unique opportunity to clean the Bay and celebrate a spirituality that recognizes our interdependency with the land and waters. The event will include a celebration of The Holy Eucharist woven into a clean-up of the beach.

The Rev. Justin Cannon, Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church (http://www.saintsalive.net), San Leandro, founded Holy Hikes in 2010 and every month leads what he called “liturgical hikes” throughout the Bay Area. Reverend Cannon explains, “During each hike we hold an entire church service with different stations along the hike for readings, prayers, and the Eucharist.” According to its website, Holy Hikes is seeking to restore and nurture our communion with the earth.

San Francisco Baykeeper has been the Bay's leading advocate since 1989. Baykeeper uses science, advocacy, clean water laws, and on-the-water patrols to help San Francisco Bay thrive.  Sejal Choksi-Chugh, Executive Director and the designated ‘Baykeeper’, comments, “Baykeeper is excited about this new partnership with Holy Hikes to help grow the diverse ecosystem of volunteers and supporters that protect our beautiful San Francisco Bay.  Together, we will continue to stand up to the biggest polluters and tackle the greatest threats to the Bay’s health.”
