Declaration From Tribes and Activists to Mendocino Redwood Co: Stop Herbicide Use!

by Karen Pickett
Activist representatives from the Action Council for Oaks and Redwood Nation, Tribes, Organizations and Individuals engaged in the second leg of a "Walk to Heal the Forest," carrying a log to to raise awareness of the vital role of the Pacific rainforests in moderating climate change and to reconnect the fragments to restore the once contiguous forest buffer. Even fragmented, Pacific rainforests sequester more carbon than any other forests on earth.
Declaration Of Action Council For Oaks And Redwoods Nation Acorn

To:
Mendocino Redwood Company
The Forest Stewardship Council
Rainforest Alliance

As representatives of the Action Council for Oaks and Redwoods Nation, Tribes, Organizations and Individuals, We declare the following:

Whereas: The passage of Measure V in Mendocino County was a clear expression of public will that the practice of Hack and Squirt to poison and kill millions of tanoaks left dead and standing, be stopped, and

Whereas, the Tanoak and other oaks were and are held sacred by the Indigenous Tribes of California and acorns are still being gathered as a food source today, and
Whereas, Sustainable Certification rules require that Company practices be in harmony with community norms,

Whereas, Local communities live instead in a state of fear and anxiety due to the increased fire danger and toxic hazards created by the Company’s practices, and
Whereas, The Company’s claim of exemption from local laws is specious and shows a total lack of concern for Community values, and

Whereas, Rainforest Alliance’s (the Certifiers) argument is identical to the Company’s in rejecting the public will,

Therefore: We demand that the Company cease and desist from the use of all herbicides and other poisons in the forest and…that failing such action, the Company’s Sustainable Certification status be revoked forthwith.
