The workers talk about the pleasure of starting work in a shipyard, the pride of making the vessel, and the recognition of workers and the high spirit of their novel struggle. There was solidarity everywhere, even in each other's mind. But there is no more energy in Hanjin Shipyard. The workers have been laid-off and the strike shows no sign of stopping. A 34 year-old worker committed suicide as well. It's the fourth who has become a martyr for the cause. Why have the laborers who worked at Hanjin shipyard separated like this? They are starting to ask themselves why they decided to hate each other.

"The Island of Shadows," 2014 (98 min), gives voice to the unionists at Hanjin and highlights the historic 309-day high-altitude sit-in by Ms. Jinsook Kim.

Ms. Jinsook Kim is widely known for her protest of labor repression at Hanjin shipyards in 2011, sitting-in atop a high altitude crane for 309 days. Accompanying Ms. Kim will be Yira Hwang, who handled the support operation on the ground for Ms. Jinsook Kim during her sit-in, and Mr. Jeonggeun Kim, director of the documentary.

Ms Kim, a female welder who spearheaded the struggle to democratize the union in the mid-1980s, was eventually fired by the company, and has been waging a persistent battle for reinstatement since then. She emerged as a key figure in the “democratic” labor movement of South Korea over the 1990s as one of the most committed leaders of the metal workers’ union movement and in the recent decades has become the champion of irregular workers.
