Thousands Attend SF Milestone March for Science

by Science Means Knowledge
Thousands of people joined San Francisco’s April 22, 2017 Earth Day March for Science to demand Trump and Congress support public funding of all science, from climate change to medical care to science education in this milestone march, the first of its kind in memory.
People of all nationalities and ages attended, including babes in arms, on shoulders and in strollers. We saw the most white medical coats on marchers since the 1989 and 1992 Marches for Abortion. The most impressive aspect of the signs of this march was the emphasis on thinking, reading and learning, which is completely lacking in this society where only 25% of the population receives a serious education, and is also lacking in Congress and in the current president.

There were plenty of signs to save the ice for the polar bears and penguins, the proverbial canaries in the coal mine for humans since a warmer planet means rising seas, destroying seacoasts and making it more difficult for humans and agriculture to survive.

Trump has threatened to shut down the government if Congress does not cut funding of the National Institutes of Health and Planned Parenthood, so he can pay for a wall at the Mexican border, which only serves the purpose of making construction companies richer.

There was union participation, from nurses to San Francisco’s engineer and scientists’ union. This March for Science was a worldwide event, including hundreds of cities in the US, many in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and elsewhere. Science is international because it is part of nature.
