The EPIC Struggle for California
By David Giesen
Historian David Giesen surveys with film and talk the magnificent political performance piece which became a political movement in 1934. Deep in the Great Depression, muck-raking author Upton Sinclair (The Jungle) wrote a booklet in 1933 detailing a program for (E)nding (P)overty (i)n (C)alifornia. The Unapologetically socialist program for putting abandoned farms and factories into the hands of workers captured the hope and energy of millions of Californians. In short order California had a Democratic Party majority for the first time, and the state’s quick step towards nation-leading social programs was launched.
