Striking UPTE UCSF Optometrists Speak Out For Patients & Justice

by Labor Video Project
UCSF UPTE optometrists went out on a one day strike for their patients and proper staffing levels. While the UC bosses and Gavin Newsom appointed regents are spending over $100 million for more hospitals in San Francisco staff are underpaid and patients have problems getting appointments.

UC UPTE optometrists from throughout the state went on strike to demand prompt
care for their patients and also parity with Kaiser optometrists. At UCSF Mission
Bay campus they rallied and picketed with other UPTE and AFSCME 3299
workers from their state bargaining teams that also faces the issue of understaffing.
They reported that many young patients have to wait weeks for appointments
and it is harming their health. Some end up having to go to the emergency room
for treatment because they cannot get quick appointments. They also protested
the fact that UC is purchasing two hospitals in San Francisco for $100 million
but the university is fighting their demand for parity with Kaiser optometrists.
As a result of salaries that at 20 to 30% below Kaiser optometrists they are
constantly losing their staff putting the healthcare of the patients in danger.
