FOUR MORE RHINESTONE YEARS

What might our RhineStone President want,
for four more fake years?

To be honored as a jet pilot,
without really flying solo?

To be admired as Brave Macho Warrior,
at least for spilling the blood of braver Yanks,
after evading combat in his youth?

To be Walter Mitty,
and yet to seem as "real" as John Wayne?

To be respected merely for being Commander in Chief,
without his competence ever being weighed?

To hold the near-dictatorial powers which a truly threatened nation
gave to FDR,
but without facing half so much danger,
and without being half so strong
as that wise old cripple?

To hold war powers endlessly,
like Big Brother,
by creating endless war?

To keep certain secrets well-hidden,
until the last sunset of 2008?

To turn history five or six decades backward,
to so-called "simpler times",
which seem simple only because we forget complexities?

To be feared by pesky intellectuals,
who should get the ineffable eff out of politics,
and retire to ivory closets
where they may harmlessly write verse in Etruscan?

To be honored for being a cardboard cut-out
of the boy his dad really wanted?
